My Approach - Documentary Wedding Photography

Documentary photography is all about capturing images of the day that together tell a story of the day and individually of the moment the photo was taken.

Unlike traditional wedding photographers who often demand your attention, and can sometimes be quite intrusive, I try to blend in as one of your guests. I like to melt into the background as much as I can so that I can capture the true emotion and activity of your wedding day.

I don't normally take any formal shots, groups shots or the likes. I will do this upon request but I think that a photojournalism approach creates far better results that are truer to the spirit of the day.

My images have been described as "retro" or "1960s", partly because, I'm guessing, I produce a lot of black and white images. In fact, I offer a little incentive to any couples that are happy to have their entire wedding shot in Black & White.

I use specialist, small, and professional grade cameras so no-one feels like they are having a big lens shoved in their face.

I prefer to work without any special lighting, assistants or extra photographers so that I can become one of the guests.

What about images of the dress, images of us with our parents and friends?

As part of telling the story of the day I will always get images of the dress. The very nature of what I do will mean I will capture images of you, your family, your friends all interacting in a much more natural way than posed images.

Why lose hours of your special day to photographs and leave your guests waiting?

The one thing I've always disliked, when I've attended weddings as a guest, is being left in limbo for a few hours while the photographs are taken. It's one of the reasons I don't intrude on the day. The documentary approach means you and your guests can enjoy the day without disturbance.

A lasting memory that's different from the usual wedding photographer

My aim is to produce images that give an honest and unposed record of your day so you can share the memories with your children and grandchildren. If you're looking for something beyond the traditional wedding photographer, then give me call on 07881 955525 or send me an enquiry »
